Starting on a new site? There are three things you need to understand before you even unpack your tools: site rules, pre starts, and SWMS.
These aren’t just formalities. They’re the law. If you ignore them, you put yourself and others at risk.
1. Site Rules
Every site has its own rules. Some are general (PPE, sign in, no mobile use), others are specific (no-go zones, inductions, working hours).
Read the signage
Follow instructions from the site supervisor
If you’re unsure, ask. Don’t assume
2. Pre Start Meetings (Toolbox Talks)
These usually happen first thing in the morning.
You’ll be briefed on the day’s work
Hazards will be identified
Everyone has a chance to raise issues
Attendance is mandatory
If you’re not there, you don’t work that day.
3. SWMS (Safe Work Method Statement)
This is your safety Bible for the task. You must sign it before starting high-risk work.
A proper SWMS includes:
Task description
Risk assessment
Control measures
PPE requirements
Who’s responsible
Never sign a SWMS without reading it.
If something changes, it must be updated or you’re not covered.
Pro Tip
Ask to keep a printed copy of the SWMS in your tool bag for reference. It shows initiative and keeps you covered.
