Starting your apprenticeship is exciting, but it’s also make or break. Most apprentices who get let go in the first month don’t fail because of technical skills. They fail because of attitude, effort, or poor habits.
Here’s what every site and supervisor expects from a first year apprentice:
1. Show up early, every time
Being five minutes early shows you’re serious. No one waits for an apprentice.
2. Be useful, not just present
Look for small ways to help. Carry gear, prep tools, clean up without being asked.
3. Listen more than you speak
You’re here to learn. Ask questions, but don’t interrupt or pretend you know it all.
4. Always carry your own tools
If you borrow something more than twice, buy it. Sparkies notice.
5. Respect the hierarchy
Everyone on site had to earn their stripes. Respect other trades, even when they don’t respect you back.
6. Learn safety protocols fast
Knowing how to fill out a SWMS or check isolation isn’t optional.
Pro Tip
Take a notebook. Write down the names of tools, materials, and terms you don’t know. Look them up later. It’ll make you stand out immediately.
