You could be the best apprentice with a drill, but if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person, you’re off the job. The way you speak on site matters just as much as the way you work.
Here’s how to handle each group the smart way:
1. Tradies (The Crew)
Don’t try to act like a legend
Listen first, talk second
If you mess up, own it fast
Respect other trades even if they don’t respect you
2. Supervisors (The Gatekeepers)
Never lie
Be direct but polite
Ask “What’s the priority?” to show initiative
Keep them in the loop if something goes wrong
3. Clients (The Real Bosses)
You’re representing your company
Be respectful, clean, and well-presented
Never talk badly about anyone or anything on site
Don’t explain technical stuff unless asked
Pro Tip
Say “Would you like me to...?” instead of “Do you want me to...?” It shows maturity and confidence without sounding like a smart-arse.
