How to Deal with Tradies, Clients, and Supervisors as a First Year Apprentice

You could be the best apprentice with a drill, but if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person, you’re off the job. The way you speak on site matters just as much as the way you work.

Here’s how to handle each group the smart way:

1. Tradies (The Crew)

  • Don’t try to act like a legend

  • Listen first, talk second

  • If you mess up, own it fast

  • Respect other trades even if they don’t respect you

2. Supervisors (The Gatekeepers)

  • Never lie

  • Be direct but polite

  • Ask “What’s the priority?” to show initiative

  • Keep them in the loop if something goes wrong

3. Clients (The Real Bosses)

  • You’re representing your company

  • Be respectful, clean, and well-presented

  • Never talk badly about anyone or anything on site

  • Don’t explain technical stuff unless asked

Pro Tip

Say “Would you like me to...?” instead of “Do you want me to...?” It shows maturity and confidence without sounding like a smart-arse.
